 Happy Place: Foust Park

"What we seek, at the deepest level, is inwardly to resemble, rather than physically to possess, the objects and places that touch us through their beauty." - Alain De Botton

Happy Space: Fountain Area behind the EUC

"The architects who benefit us most maybe those generous enough to lay aside their claims to genius in order to devote themselves to assembling graceful but predominantly unoriginal boxes. Architecture should have the confidence and the kindness to be a little boring."
-Alain De Botton

By having a space or place of happiness I feel that its how everything involved with in it is tied together so beautiful to where it gives off a sense of happiness. By following the rules it allows you to take the elements and make sure that they all work together and allow for the observer to have a happy feeling while being consumed by the space or place. With spaces that tend to give off this essence usually have factors of calmness and serenity. For example in the two pictures I have chosen they use items such as a flowing fountain and lots of trees and plants. They are also very open airy places/spaces, but at the same time they are closed off in some way. Some of the most important rules I feel to help achieve the sense of happiness is the rules that say "Strive for harmony and order in all things" because if there is no order or harmony to how they work together there will be no fluidity to and it will come across a jumbled mess. Also there is the one that says "Emphasize spiritual (not just religions) connections" and "Move forward the secular( not just religious ) agenda" which with those rules it shows that you need to make it to where everyone can have a sense of connection just emotional wise not just through religious practices.

Reading Response 3: The Roman Theatre

The Music Building: Commodity+Firmness+Delight

Firmness: The School of Music Building, a three story 130,000 feet facility is a very dominant structure on the UNC Greensboro Campus. At the front of the building there is a circular structure that the top withholds an organ chamber inside. The circular structure helps represent the unity of the Music Education that goes on within this building. Being made of stone allows to show the strength and firmness of the building and play a more influential role into its location and purpose.

Delight: The music building gives of this peaceful essence which relates to the sound and flow of the music that is created in the building. Another delight that is incorporated into the structure of the building is if you look down at the tiles is seems as if the building is creating waves which is also a mimic of the sound of the music flowing from the instruments.

Commodity: This building I feel is an important asset to this campus in many ways. It allows for a peaceful environment for music students to learn. But not only that it also allows for people to come in and practice their own music on their own time in a practice room. Its a setting where people can relax and just enjoy the essence of music and let it move them in the way they want it to.

Axis: This building is sitting on the major axis that this campus is built on. With it being directly across from the School of Education I feel it is a reflection of the education that goes on inside of this building. With the dome on the building standing so tall helps it stand out and gives it an important significance and helps us understand that it is one of the main factors on this campus.

UNCG Campus: 10 Ideas

Space: The space displayed in the picture is the hall of the front of the Elliot University Center. This is one of the main locations on UNCG campus. A lot of different activities go on here at all hours of the day and it allows for people to pass through easily and also provides many different activities with in it.

Power: This building the way it is built with all the stone and the high ceilings seems powerful in itself. But also another way that it could seem powerful is just the essence of what goes on with in it. All the communication, eating, people passing, performances, interest booths, and all the different activities just builds a sort of power throughout the student population at UNCG.

Experience: The EUC allows for a lot of new experiences to take place. They have so many different opportunities that apply to all different types of people. Their always having different things go on and new things to experience inside this building.

Principles: Knowing that this place is a campus wide gathering place it reminds people that they can all be different but still gather and communicate with in one place. It allows our campus community to have a stronger bond.

Precedent: This building is made with great height and made out of cement and wood. The structure includes a lot of circles. The columns are circular, the floors have circles on them, and even the walls for a circular shape. By the building doing this symbolizes the coming together of a group of people and unity which is a strong statement since this is one of the main hangout spots and passage ways for students on this campus.

Site: The location of this building is a tall standing building right in the middle of campus. No matter where you are you can always meet up with someone in the middle at the EUC. By it being in the middle of the campus it helps it symbolize a meeting place for everyone.

Order: This building has a very specific order to it. The architecture of the windows and the wood paneling help display that by the alternating colors and shapes. Not only is the structure in a specific order the way things are placed inside the building are organized in a certain order depending on importance and convenience.

Scale: This is a very tall and strong structured building. It helps it stand out and you can see it from a ways away. The tallness helps exemplify and intensify the importance of the building.

Technology: Technology was used when deciding the set up and how it would appear to the senses of the people on this campus to help the flow of this space.

Surface: The vertical columns on this building are constructed of stone. Where the floor is tile and the walls are made of wood.
